Faces to Die For

Words by: Alessandra Sy, Year 12

Halloween is here and most of us will know the typical scenario for the procrastinating girl: you’re in dire need of a halloween look, but you have no time to put one together. We’ve all been there, and frankly, it sucks. Plus, it can be extremely stressful. So, let this article be your fairy godmother, and follow these easy steps to put together a last minute costume to really get you into the halloween spirit! (Spirit, get it?)

Side-note: I’ll be mentioning the make-up I used, and that I highly recommend, but you can use whatever you have at home and what works for you.

Inspired By: Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood music video, and mostly resembles ‘Cut-throat’.
Approximate Time It Will Take: 15 Minutes
Clothes: Black, black and black.
Hair: A clean, high ponytail.

Products:
  • Chanel Rouge Coco Baume
  • Laura Mercier Foundation Primer
  • NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation in ‘Barcelona’
  • NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in ‘Ginger’
  • MAC Prep and Prime Highlighter in ‘Bright Forecast’

  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil in ‘Medium Brown’

Steps:
  1. Moisturise your lips, you’ll be packing a lot of lipstick later on.
  2. Apply primer all over your face, this will help your foundation stay on longer.
  3. Apply foundation. I recommend using a beauty blender, as it gives a smoother, airbrush finish.
  4. Apply concealer on any blemishes or spots.
  5. Use a highlighter on your cupid’s bow, top of your chin, down your nose and on your cheekbones, this is so you’ll look like you’re glowing when they take photos with flash.
  6. Contour your face with bronzer to make it look sharper and fiercer.
  7. Apply powder all over your face so it all stays in tact and won’t cake up later in the night.
  8. Curl your lashes.
  9. Apply mascara, and try to make it as bold as you can.
  10. This last step is lipstick. You want to use a dark shade, preferably in red, to be the statement of your entire look.

Inspired By: Traditional halloween looks.
Approximate Time It Will Take: 10 Minutes
Clothes: Skirt, dresses, anything that looks fairly innocent and doll-like!
Hair: Pigtails, plaits, or hair just down. Don’t worry about neatness, messy works fine with it.

Steps:
  1. Moisturise your lips, a lot of product will go on them later.
  6. Apply blush on the apples of your cheeks. You don’t really want to overdo this, but make sure it’s bold and pink enough to be unnatural.
  7. Apply powder all over your face so it all stays in tact and won’t cake up later in the night.
  8. Apply pink eyeshadow on your eyelids.
  9. Curl your lashes.
  10. Go crazy with applying the mascara for this look. I highly recommend layering them as well, as this gives it a bolder look.
  11. Apply foundation on your lips to wash them out.
  12. Draw two out curving lines on the middle of your lips. This makes your lips look much smaller than they are.
  13. Fill it in with lipstick.
  14. Use eyeliner to draw a line from the ends of your ‘lips’ and going outwards onto your cheeks into a smile.
  15. Draw small lines that resemble stitches on this line. You don’t want the stitches to look too neat, so don’t be afraid to make them slant in different directions!
Inspired By: Traditional halloween looks.
Approximate Time It Will Take: 20 Minutes
Clothes: Again it’s just black, black and black.
Hair: Entirely up to you, but I recommend having it either nice and neat or to have lots of volume!

Products:
  • Chanel Rouge Coco Baume
  • Laura Mercier Foundation Primer
  • BareMinerals Original Foundation in ‘Golden Tan’
  • Guerlain Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzing Powder in ‘03 Brunettes’

  • Maybelline the Rocket Volum’Express Mascara

Steps:
  1. Moisturise your lips.
  2. Apply primer all over your face, this will help your foundation stay on longer.
  3. Apply foundation, and this one I used for this look can act as your powder as well.
  4. Apply bronzer to further define and sharpen your features.
  5. For eyeshadow, get three different shades that are all cool colours and relatively the same.
  6. Use eyeliner to do a cat eye on your upper lash line. How thick or thin the line is entirely depends on the effect of the look you want.
  7. Curl your lashes.
  8. Apply mascara. I wouldn’t want to overdo this, but that’s entirely up to you.
  9. Apply lipstick, the colour doesn’t really matter too much, but you’ll want to use pink, to make it look softer.
  10. Obviously, a cat look isn’t finished without the nose and whiskers. So just use eyeliner to draw them on!
