CLASSICS
The Shining (1980) (RATE: 4.5 / 5)
Based on the brilliant novel by Stephen King, The Shining is a horror classic about a father becoming a winter caretaker of an isolated hotel along with his wife and troubled son. Whilst his writing career goes nowhere and his son’s psychic abilities become darkly intensified, his frightened wife grows to learn what her delusional husband has actually been doing, and what the dark hotel has been doing to him.

The Shining is a chilling, suspenseful and manic journey into madness and defies the line between what is real and what is not. With brilliant cinematography and an eerie plot, this 80’s film is a disturbing trip to paranoia and insanity. Must watch!

The Ring (2002) (RATE: 3.5 / 5)
An urban myth is tossed around about an old video tape with disturbing footage on it, and after watching, the viewer gets a phone call predicting their death in exactly 7 days. A newspaper reporter is skeptical to this legend, until 4 recent teenage deaths grab her attention. Investigating their random fatalities, she watches the footage herself and must solve this paranormal mystery in 7 days, before she becomes apart of the myth herself.

With a lot of creepy footage and a haunting sense of atmosphere, The Ring is the foundation for all paranormal films that truly gets under your skin. It contains chilling sound effects, discomforting visuals and an atmosphere of anxiousness - a tension perfect for Halloween!

Child’s Play (1988) (RATE: 3 / 5)
Where the Chucky franchise came to life, Child’s Play is a thrilling film about a mother giving her child a disturbing doll possessed by the soul of a serial killer. Overflowing with many slashing scenes and nightmarish tones, Child’s Play is the basis of all creepy doll films. As it is not a modern scary film, some may consider it a thriller due to its lack of actual horror, however, Chucky’s disturbing and horrifying doll face definitely increases the petrifying atmosphere!

Vowing to solve the mystery, he uncovers more footage and signs that point to a supernatural force whilst living in a house that turns family into fatality.

A haunting plot, suspenseful scenes, disturbing children and vintage, hair-raising old camera footage only exudes a little bit of Sinister’s, sinister atmosphere!

The Gallows (2015) (RATE: 4 / 5)
A group of mischievous teenagers plan to ruin the stage of their small high school rebooted production The Gallows - a play that ended in a fatal accident 20 years earlier. Filmed from only their phones and one video camera, the teenagers discover that the tragedy is more twisted than a noose.. an object they’ll soon become familiar with.

Containing lots of suspenseful scares, horrifying footage, realistic tones and a paranormal backstory, The Gallows is a recent thriller that is definitely one to watch.

The Babadook (2014) (RATE: 4.5 / 5)
6 years after the violent death of her husband, a struggling widow is challenged at taking care of her troubled 6 year old son. After discovering that he dreams about a monster planning on killing them both, a disturbing storybook arrives at their door and forces her to realise that maybe they aren’t just dreams after all. The Babadook is full of drama, mystery and suspense and depends on actual horror not just on jump scares. This spine-chilling story about a monster entering a home through the pages of a children’s book obscures the line of reality and fantasy and brings all your auspicious nightmares to life.

Halloween is a perfect time to bake and be creative with the food that you eat. If you love baking, this is definitely what you need. If you don’t love baking, get someone else to make these for you! I’m looking at you, Mom.

Recipe #1 (My personal favourite)
No-bake Cheesecake ‘Truffle Mummies’

Ingredients:
- 3/2 cups gingersnap cookie crumbs
- 1/4 cup canned pumpkin puree
- 1/3 cup graham cracker crumbs
- 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- A pinch of salt
- 3 ounces softened cream cheese
- 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
- Red food colouring

Preparation instructions:
Step 1: In a large bowl combine gingersnap crumbs, pumpkin puree, graham cracker crumbs, powdered sugar,  cinnamon, salt, and cream cheese. Mix until smooth. Melt ½ cup white chocolate chips and mix into truffle mixture.
Step 2: Cover and chill until dough is solid enough to roll into balls - about 1 hour in the fridge or 30 minutes in the freezer. When cold enough, roll mixture into 12-14 balls. Place a toothpick in each ball.
Step 3: Melt remaining white chocolate chips or white dipping chocolate in a small bowl. Use toothpicks to dip each truffle ball into the white chocolate, being sure to coat all sides. Gently shake off excess chocolate. Place chocolate-covered truffle balls on a baking sheet or plate lined with wax paper, parchment paper, or foil. Chill for 3-5 minutes until chocolate hardens.
Step 4: Drizzle more white chocolate over the truffles. Soak the end of a Q-tip in red food colouring. Dap 2 dots of food colouring to make the mummy eyes (Handle carefully so you don't wipe off the eyes!) Store chilled in airtight container.
Recipe #2 (How cute are they?!)
Spooky-boo Brownies

Ingredients:
- 1 box brownie mix (or pre-made brownies); prepare the brownies separately
- 1.25 cups Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy creamy white frosting (from 16-oz container)
- 16 large marshmallows
- Decorating gel

Preparation instructions:
Step 1: Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Line 8- or 9-inch square pan with foil so foil extends about 2 inches over sides of pan. Spray foil with cooking spray. Make brownies as directed on box for 8- or 9-inch square pan. Cool completely for about 1 1/2 hours. Remove brownies from pan by lifting foil; remove foil. For 16 brownies, cut into 4 rows by 4 rows.
Step 2: Heat frosting in microwavable bowl uncovered on High 30 seconds, stirring every 10 seconds, until frosting can be stirred smooth and fluid. If frosting becomes too firm while decorating, microwave for 5 seconds; stir.
Step 3: Stick 1 large marshmallow onto each brownie using a bit of frosting. Spoon 1 tablespoon frosting over each marshmallow to coat. Let stand for 30 mins or until frosting is set. Use edible black gel to make eyes and mouths.

Recipe #3 (Trust me, the effort is SO worth it)
Pumpkin Cheesecake Snickerdoodles

Cookie Ingredients:
- 3¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1½ tsp. baking powder
- ½ tsp. salt
- ½ tsp. ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp. freshly-ground ground nutmeg
- 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- ¾ cup pumpkin puree
- 1 large egg
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract

Filling Ingredients:
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- ¼ cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Cinnamon-sugar coating:
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp. ground ginger
- Dash of allspice

Preparation instructions:
Step 1: In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg together. Set aside.
Step 2: In a kitchen aid mixer with a paddle attachment, beat together the butter and sugars on medium high speed until fluffy about 2-3 minutes.
Step 3: Blend in pumpkin puree, beat in egg and then add vanilla. Slowly add dry ingredients on low speed just until combined. Cover and chill dough for an hour.
Step 4: To make the cream cheese filling, blend cream cheese, sugar and vanilla together. Chill for an hour.
Step 5: Preheat oven to 350 and line your baking sheets with parchment paper. In a small bowl, combine the sugar and spices for the coating and set aside.
Step 6: To make the cookies, take a tablespoon of the cookie batter. Flatten it like a pancake and place a teaspoon of the cream cheese in centre. Form another tablespoon of the cookie batter into a flat pancake shape and place on top of the cream cheese. Pinch the edges together sealing in the cream cheese and roll into a ball. Roll in the cinnamon sugar coating and place on the prepared baking sheet 2 inches apart.
Step 7: Repeat until the dough is gone and flatten the cookie dough balls with a heavy bottomed glass or measuring cup.
Step 8: Bake the cookies for 10-15 minutes or until the tops start to crack. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes and transfer to a wire rack. Enjoy!

Recipe #4 (absolutely amazing. Who needs Starbucks when you’ve got this?)
Crock pot pumpkin spiced latte

Ingredients:
- 6 cups of milk (I used whole)
- 4-6 cups of strongly brewed coffee
- 1/2 cup of pumpkin puree
- 1/2 cup of vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
- 3 cinnamon sticks

Preparation instructions:
Step 1: In your crock pot, combine the milk and coffee.
Step 2: Whip together the pumpkin, vanilla, sugar and cinnamon and pour into the crockpot.
Step 3: Mix together well.
Step 4: Toss in 3-4 cinnamon sticks.
Step 5: Cover the crockpot, and cook on high for 2 hours.

If you don’t have a large group of people, you can easily halve the recipe! Heating up leftovers doesn’t work so well with this recipe.

Recipe #5 (simple, but effective)
Pumpkin chocolate chip cupcakes

Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup canned pumpkin puree
- 1/4 cup water
- 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 5/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Preparation instructions:
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease and flour muffin pan or use paper liners.
Step 2: Mix sugar, oil, eggs. Add pumpkin and water. In separate bowl mix together the baking flour, baking soda, baking powder, spices and salt.
Step 3: Add wet mixture and stir in chocolate chips.
Step 4: Fill muffin cups 2/3 full with batter. Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes

Halloween is here and most of us will know the typical scenario for the procrastinating girl: you’re in dire need of a halloween look, but you have no time to put one together. We’ve all been there, and frankly, it sucks. Plus, it can be extremely stressful. So, let this article be your fairy godmother, and follow these easy steps to put together a last minute costume to really get you into the halloween spirit! (Spirit, get it?)

Side-note: I’ll be mentioning the make-up I used, and that I highly recommend, but you can use whatever you have at home and what works for you.

Inspired By: Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood music video, and mostly resembles ‘Cut-throat’.
Approximate Time It Will Take: 15 Minutes
Clothes: Black, black and black.
Hair: A clean, high ponytail.

Products:
  • Chanel Rouge Coco Baume
  • Laura Mercier Foundation Primer
  • NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation in ‘Barcelona’
  • NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in ‘Ginger’
  • MAC Prep and Prime Highlighter in ‘Bright Forecast’

Steps:
  1. Moisturise your lips, you’ll be packing a lot of lipstick later on.
  2. Apply primer all over your face, this will help your foundation stay on longer.
  3. Apply foundation. I recommend using a beauty blender, as it gives a smoother, airbrush finish.
  4. Apply concealer on any blemishes or spots.
  5. Use a highlighter on your cupid’s bow, top of your chin, down your nose and on your cheekbones, this is so you’ll look like you’re glowing when they take photos with flash.
  6. Contour your face with bronzer to make it look sharper and fiercer.
  7. Apply powder all over your face so it all stays in tact and won’t cake up later in the night.
  8. Curl your lashes.
  9. Apply mascara, and try to make it as bold as you can.
  10. This last step is lipstick. You want to use a dark shade, preferably in red, to be the statement of your entire look.

Inspired By: Traditional halloween looks.
Approximate Time It Will Take: 10 Minutes
Clothes: Skirt, dresses, anything that looks fairly innocent and doll-like!
Hair: Pigtails, plaits, or hair just down. Don’t worry about neatness, messy works fine with it.

  6. Apply blush on the apples of your cheeks. You don’t really want to overdo this, but make sure it’s bold and pink enough to be unnatural.
  7. Apply powder all over your face so it all stays in tact and won’t cake up later in the night.
  8. Apply pink eyeshadow on your eyelids.
  9. Curl your lashes.
  10. Go crazy with applying the mascara for this look. I highly recommend layering them as well, as this gives it a bolder look.
  11. Apply foundation on your lips to wash them out.
  12. Draw two out curving lines on the middle of your lips. This makes your lips look much smaller than they are.
  13. Fill it in with lipstick.
  14. Use eyeliner to draw a line from the ends of your ‘lips’ and going outwards onto your cheeks into a smile.
  15. Draw small lines that resemble stitches on this line. You don’t want the stitches to look too neat, so don’t be afraid to make them slant in different directions!
Inspired By: Traditional halloween looks.
Approximate Time It Will Take: 20 Minutes
Clothes: Again it’s just black, black and black.
Hair: Entirely up to you, but I recommend having it either nice and neat or to have lots of volume!

Products:
  • Chanel Rouge Coco Baume
  • Laura Mercier Foundation Primer
  • BareMinerals Original Foundation in ‘Golden Tan’
  • Guerlain Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzing Powder in ‘03 Brunettes’
  • Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette

  • Maybelline the Rocket Volum’Express Mascara
  • NARS Sheer Lipstick in ‘Gipsy’
Steps:
  1. Moisturise your lips.
  2. Apply primer all over your face, this will help your foundation stay on longer.
  3. Apply foundation, and this one I used for this look can act as your powder as well.
  4. Apply bronzer to further define and sharpen your features.
  5. For eyeshadow, get three different shades that are all cool colours and relatively the same.
  6. Use eyeliner to do a cat eye on your upper lash line. How thick or thin the line is entirely depends on the effect of the look you want.
  7. Curl your lashes.
  8. Apply mascara. I wouldn’t want to overdo this, but that’s entirely up to you.
  9. Apply lipstick, the colour doesn’t really matter too much, but you’ll want to use pink, to make it look softer.
  10. Obviously, a cat look isn’t finished without the nose and whiskers. So just use eyeliner to draw them on!
