May 8, 2013. A revolutionary day for Manchester United. World famous manager Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement as manager of Manchester United, leaving behind a champion squad and raising the expectations of millions. Just days after his retirement, the club announced that David Moyes, former Everton manager, would take over the club following Alex Ferguson’s retirement as manager.

A new era had begun at the club. Fans expected countless trophies in Moyes’ first season, especially after United’s record-breaking 20th Domestic league trophy. Moyes’ reign as manager started off well, with convincing wins over Wigan Athletic in the FA Community Shield and Swansea to open the season.

But from that point onwards, it had all gone downhill. United had suffered their worst Premier League start in history.  An embarrassing 4-1 loss to city rivals Manchester City, a 2-1 loss to West Bromwich Albion, and poor performances from Moyes’ new £27.5 million signing of Marouane Fellaini have led to his reign being labeled as “disastrous”.

The year 2013 did not end well for Moyes. It saw his side lose consecutive defeats at home for the first time in 13 years. Similarly, 2014 did not start very well as United were knocked out of the FA Cup and Football League Cup within a matter of weeks. As of now, United are currently ranked sixth after 28 games and 11 points away from a crucial Champions league qualifying spot as of March 11, 2014.

However, not all is lost. United’s Champions league campaign has been brilliant, with superb victories over Bayer Leverkusen and solid results against Shaktar Donetsk and Real Sociedad.

Recently, Moyes’ reign as manager has come under more fire after a humiliating defeat against Olympiacos in the knockout phase of the Champions league. In light of the defeat to Olympiacos, Moyes claimed responsibility for United’s poor season, with Moyes sending letters to season ticket holders apologizing for the poor season.

"Everywhere we turn people outside the club have a lot to say about Manchester United, but we have all stuck together through some tough times this season and I firmly believe that, in the long run, we will all come out at the other end, stronger for the experiences." – David Moyes

Disgruntled United fan, Paco Litonjua, comments on United’s poor season. “ I believe that the club is in need of a drastic change, that change being the dismissal of David Moyes as Manchester United manager. Ever since Moyes took over the job, performances have been nothing but disappointing.”

With a crucial game at home to Olympiacos, will Moyes be able to turn his season around and salvage a crucial Champions league spot for the 2014-2015 season? Can the new ‘holy trinity’, consisting of Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney, and Robin Van Persie, create the spark that will push this team to victory? Mark March 18 on your calendar, as it will be a crucial day for United’s season.
