Voted as TIME’s person of the year in 2013, Pope Francis has no doubt become one of the most prominent figures in the present day world. Some may argue that the position of Pope has always been of great significance, yet it is evident that the present Pope has taken this preeminence to a whole new level. Unlike his predecessors, Pope Francis acquired the position of Pope with a progressive and insightful vision: to give the Catholic Church a chance to modernise, and adapt its methods of teaching to the more liberal and technologically-propelled world that we live in today.
In our increasingly open-minded cultures, it is foreseeable for many to feel as if the beliefs of the Church have become archaic and intransigent amidst society’s growing demand to tackle “taboo” subjects, such as homosexuality and abortion. The Pope, however, refuted this conservative image and is driving the Church towards a completely different direction in comparison to his precursors. This, along with his recent visit, inspired me to explore some of his recent endeavours that have changed the image of the Catholic Church:

2. He believes that the Church should not interfere with controversial topics
3. He suggested that he might see atheists in heaven
4. He takes a strong stance against prioritizing luxurious possessions over faith and charity
5. He washed a Muslim woman’s feet
