Title: Interstellar
Director: Christopher Nolan
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine
Rating: 3.5/4

Here's a question: What's got a black hole but doesn't suck? The answer to that is the science fiction thriller, Interstellar. This 3-hour movie is certainly the biggest undertaking of Nolan's career thus far, considering the sheer complexity of the source material - even when dumbed down to Hollywood standards. With a star-studded cast of actors including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Michael Caine, Nolan’s newest movie will surely satisfy that science fiction itch of yours.

Interstellar focuses on the journey of Matthew McConaughey's character, Cooper, as he leaves Earth with a team of astronauts to journey into a wormhole in search of a habitable planet. Compared to the other big-budget science fiction films of today, like Star Trek or Star Wars or some other Star ------ movie, Interstellar is firmly grounded to reality. There are no laser guns, no warp drives, and most certainly no ‘Gungans’. Instead, those typical aspects of the science fiction genre are replaced with cold, hard science. Most of the going-ons can be completely explained by physics, rather than some sneaky pseudoscience and magical hand-waving (save for one instance in the movie that I cannot name for reasons that involve spoilers). This scientific accuracy adds to the quality of the film, as it really puts the possibility of this happening in real life in your head. For example, the wormhole, although hypothetical, is scientifically plausible, as proven by Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen.

The relationships and character development is also something to take note of. Nolan beautifully establishes the links between characters, and then presents the effects of deep-space travel on those relationships through some heart-wrenching scenes. The sentiment becomes even more palpable as the astronauts grow even more distant from the Earth. A whole spectrum of human emotions is explored throughout the movie, from love to fear and even more, if you’re into that sort of thing.

However, one particular thing that Interstellar differs in - compared to other science fiction movies - is the amount of action it contains. For example, Interstellar does not have the same amount of fighting and shooting as Star Wars might have. Indeed, for some people, this might be a bad thing. Interstellar has a higher dialogue to action ratio than those scientific fiction movies, which is a downside. For example, they don't leave Earth until a good thirty minutes into the movie!

Interstellar may have too much talk for it to be filled with action, however one has to remember that Interstellar is not that kind of movie. It's not a typical action flick, it's a smart movie that needs to be thought about for it to be truly appreciated. Even if you don't think that you'd like that kind of film, I guarantee that you will. In conclusion, Interstellar is a great movie that you should watch.

Seriously. Watch it.
