Apple has officially announced the release of the iPhone 6 - the eighth generation of iPhone at a special event in Cupertino. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are now available for purchase via Apple's online web store and through its retail stores in the US and other selected countries; however, it has yet to come out in the Philippines. Tim Cook has also treated us to Apple’s smart watch – referred to as the Apple Watch as opposed to the iWatch as we might have predicted – a completely all-new, never-before-seen gadget.
For those of you who don’t already know, the new iPhone 6 comes in two different sizes: 4.7” and 5.5” – with the 5.5” version dubbed the iPhone 6 Plus. Tim Cook purposely created the iPhone 6 Plus to compete against all the Phablets, phone-tablets, which are now becoming increasingly popular. However, this year’s iPhone launch, despite the magnitude of the changes present, didn’t come as too much of a surprise as there were just too many fairly accurate leaks.
The Apple website states that: ‘iPhone 6 isn’t simply bigger — it’s better in every way. Larger, yet dramatically thinner.’ However, some rumours state that the iPhone 6 is no long
er scratchproof – despite Apple’s claims of using sapphire glass for the screen. Furthermore, with the iPhone at its thinnest (6.6 mm) people have been posting pictures from all over the web of bent iPhone 6 Pluses, as a result from keeping them in jean pockets. Yet, despite the rumors circulating about the new iPhones, iPhone 6 sales have still seen a noticeable rise, bypassing that of the iPhone 5. The handsets still are, of course, very impressive pieces with new features such as support for 20 bands of LTE, 128GB storage options and radically improved camera technology. Apple always boasts that the new iPhone is the BEST iPhone, however this time it looks as if the tech giant isn’t merely spouting empty promises – 2014’s iPhones are shaping up to be what a lot of people have been waiting for since 2012.
Apple also took the time to detail its plan for mobile payments (via NFC and TouchID) with Apple Pay, as well as showcasing its first foray into the wearable tech space with its Apple Watch. It went on to show off some new, previously unseen iOS 8 features and then surprisingly confirmed it would be giving U2’s new album away for free to anyone with an Apple ID.
