By Alessandra Sy, Year 12
The 58th annual Grammy Awards was held on the 15th of February 2016 at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, California, and it was hosted by LL Cool J. To be completely honest, if you missed this year’s Grammys, you didn’t miss out on too much. Adele struggled with a bit of technical issues, both Rihanna and Lauryn Hill failed to make an appearance because of illnesses, there were five ballads in a row until the Lionel Richie tribute, and there’s an ongoing debate on whether Lady Gaga truly “paid tribute” or just butchered Bowie.
Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones, seemed to think of it as the latter, as he sent out a tweet responding to her performance:
And, well, it’s the dictionary term for ‘Gaga’.
However, Taylor Swift absolutely saved the night with her performance of “Out of the Woods” in a sparkly black jumpsuit. Although Taylor’s performance made our lives, she seemed distraught when the lights went down. There is a video of her her wiping her eyes repeatedly as she sheds tears, with her best friend, Selena Gomez, by her side to comfort her. She turned back and seemed to ask those seated behind her:
But she definitely brought it back during her acceptance speech when she responded to Kanye West’s degrading remark in his new song entitled “Famous”. In her speech, she pointed out that she’s the first woman to win album of the year twice and stated:
“I want to say to all the young women out there –there are going to be
people along the way who are going to try to undercut your success or
take credit for your accomplishments or your fame.”
Also, we all just assumed that Ed Sheeran has around nine Grammys by now, but he had always left the award show empty-handed… UNTIL NOW. Our favourite ginger star rightfully won the title of “Best Pop Solo Performance” for his song “Thinking Out Loud”.
After his name was announced, #FRIENDSHIPGOALS history was made when Taylor had this reaction:
That truly cemented Taylor as the queen of this year's Grammy Awards.
